Can Awnings Be Installed on All Types of Home Finishes?

awning installation on different building and home finished

Yes. As long as your planned location has at least eight feet of clearance above the ground and 12 inches above the designated door or window, you can install an awning. Awnings can be properly anchored to any type of home finish, although the installation and securing process will vary depending on the material.

The experienced installation crews at Arizona Awnings have the experience and commercial-grade tools and materials to make installation seamless and stress-free, regardless of your home or commercial property’s exterior.

Different Types of Finishes

Vinyl

Made PVC resin, vinyl siding is low maintenance, malleable, rot-resistant and highly customizable – but it doesn’t have the strength to support an awning all by itself. Installers need to locate studs or install mounting boards to handle the weight. We’ll also take extra precautions to prevent the vinyl from cracking due to drilling or bearing the weight of an awning. By reinforcing the brackets with sturdy mounting brackets and properly sealing the hardware, we can ensure awnings are firmly secured to homes with vinyl siding without damaging the exterior or compromising the protection offered by your siding.

Aluminum Siding

Aluminum siding also offers limited support and can buckle under the weight of an awning without proper mounting. Similarly to vinyl, during installation, we’ll drill through the siding to reach the sturdy material underneath and install a cross brace to firmly secure your awning.

Wood Siding

In contrast to aluminum or vinyl siding, properly installed wood siding may have the strength to support an awning without a lot of additional hardware or modification. While it costs less to repair and is highly customizable with different styles and stains, wood siding is vulnerable to harsh weather conditions, pest infestations and fire, which can consequently impact your awning.

Our awnings are constructed with durable, vibrant and flame-retardant fabrics backed with a 10-year fade warranty. We build our awnings to last, so homeowners can get the most out of their investment.

Stucco

Stucco is a popular home finish in Arizona due to its aesthetic charm, weather resilience, fire resistance and enhanced thermal properties. Made with a combination of cement and sand, it has a longer lifespan than most home finishes, typically lasting 50 years or longer. However, it’s more susceptible to cracking than other home finishes, which makes properly anchoring an awning using the right tools – minimizing exterior damage and maximizing stability – crucial.

To secure your awning to a stucco finish, we’ll drill through the stucco and attach the studs to the firm underlayer to ensure the awning is properly secure and won’t loosen with time or fall off.

Concrete Lap Siding

While concrete lap siding is the most durable home finish, it doesn’t have the fortitude to support heavy loads, like an awning without additional support. Without effective anchoring, this siding has an elevated risk of exterior cracking, causing your awning to tear out and fall off in high winds. We’ll reinforce your awning with sturdy framing members to prevent this worst-case scenario from occurring.

Masonry

Brick and stone veneers are generally sturdy and may be able to support an awning independently depending on how it’s attached to the home. For brick or block homes without siding, awning installation is straightforward and doesn’t require the mounting hardware that may be necessary with a layer of siding. However, if your home is older and your masonry is exhibiting signs of age – such as if there are cracks in the veneer or the grout – additional reinforcement steps may need to be taken.

At Arizona Awnings, we’ll use our expertise to discern the best installation approach to guarantee long-term stability and the ability of your awning to withstand the harshest Phoenix weather conditions. We guarantee your awning will be installed securely without compromising your home’s curbside appeal.
