What Is the Urban Heat Island Effect and Can Shade Structures Help?

urban heat island

As the Valley has grown, so has the intensity of what’s known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, where city centers become significantly warmer than their rural counterparts due to human activity and infrastructure. Phoenix is affected by this phenomenon more than virtually any other U.S. city, where rapidly expanding urbanization has led to rising temperatures in heavily developed areas over the years.

While shade structures like awnings can’t completely reverse the UHI effect, they can provide localized relief, especially in places like school playgrounds and outdoor seating areas.

Phoenix and the Heat Island Effect

Phoenix is one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., and with that growth comes more infrastructure, fewer natural landscapes and rising temperatures. In the early 20th century, when Phoenix was a much smaller city, the average high temperatures in the summer were notably cooler than today. For example, the average high temperature in July 1920 was around 102°F, whereas in July 2020, the average high reached a blistering 106°F.

This increase is largely due to urbanization. Natural spaces have been replaced by heat-trapping surfaces like roads, parking lots and buildings. The result is longer, hotter summers, with nighttime temperatures that don’t dip enough to allow trapped heat to fully dissipate before the sun rises again.

The consequences of the Urban Heat Island effect are wide-reaching. Elevated temperatures lead to higher energy demands for cooling, increased air pollution and heightened health risks like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, are particularly at risk.

Can Shade Structures Help?

While shade structures aren’t large enough to directly reverse the UHI effect, they can play an important role in mitigating its impact, particularly at a micro-level. Awnings and shade structures provide immediate relief by offering cooler, shaded environments in specific areas and reducing heat absorption in the shaded areas on a property.

Relief for Homes and Businesses

For homeowners and businesses in Phoenix, awnings offer a practical way to beat the heat. By shading windows and outdoor spaces, awnings help reduce the amount of direct sunlight hitting a building, which can lower indoor temperatures and reduce the need for air conditioning. Over time, this can lead to lower energy bills and a more comfortable environment during the hottest parts of the day.

Outdoor seating areas at restaurants or cafes can also benefit from shade structures. A well-placed awning or canopy can make outdoor dining a viable option for more of the year, creating a more comfortable experience for customers and encouraging more foot traffic during the warmer spring and early fall months.

Mitigating Heat on Playgrounds and Outdoor Areas

One of the most practical applications of shade structures is on school playgrounds or outdoor recreational areas. In Phoenix, where playground equipment can reach dangerously high temperatures in the summer, shade structures can create a safer and cooler space for children to play.

Large shade sails or structures can significantly reduce the heat on play areas and equipment, allowing kids to enjoy outdoor activities without the risk of heat-related illnesses or burns from hot surfaces.

Similarly, businesses with outdoor seating or event spaces can use shade structures to create more inviting environments. While it won’t change the overall urban temperature, it makes a noticeable difference in these localized spots.

Encouraging More Outdoor Activity

In a city where outdoor activity can feel impossible for several months a year, shade structures make public spaces more usable. Parks, playgrounds and courtyards can remain accessible for more of the year when shade is introduced.

By creating shaded zones, communities can encourage more outdoor activities, which not only improves public health but also reduces the strain on indoor cooling systems as more people opt to spend time outside.

Although You Can’t Personally Combat UHI, You Can Lessen Its Impact on Your Property

On a small scale, awnings and shade structures provide real, tangible benefits to those living and working in the intense heat of Phoenix. While they might not reverse the UHI effect, they offer a practical way to stay cooler and more comfortable amid rising temperatures.
